After the fall of the Dark Lord, several things were changed. The Lestranges and Crouch never tortured the Longbottoms, so Neville grew up in a nice home. The four Death Eaters were not captured and laid low for a number of years before joining up with Antonin Dolohov. James and Lily Potter (along with several other people) were not killed on Halloween nor in the aftermath. Harry has grown up with his parents and is a great deal similar to his father and godfather in personality. Petter Pettigrew was caught and tried and is currently incarcerated in Azkaban. He was not allowed to rejoin the Death Eaters, and is far safer in Azkaban anyway. Therefore, Sirius Black is free and lives with Remus Lupin. As Sirius can find good work, they live quite comfortably in Godric's Hollow.
During Harry's first year, things were entirely uneventful. There were a few school-related incidents such as people getting jinxed and exploding homework, but overall, it was fairly normal. Harry still made friends with Ron and Hermione, but it took them a while longer to really accept the girl. Everyone was sorted into their same houses. Harry received the invisibility cloak straight from his father this year.
During this time, someone tried to, or at least made it seem they were trying to, break into Hogwarts. In the middle of the night during different days of the week, the doors of the entrance hall would shake and thunder as though someone was trying to force them open. There was a period where some students had been called home, but the situation resolved itself in November with the halting of these activities. Also, Dobby still works at the Malfoys as he has never had reason to leave. Gilderoy Lockheart was never obliviated, but his failure to obliviate a wizard properly lead to his exposure and loss of fan base. Dolores Umbridge was unable to pass her anti-werewolf legislation due to interference by Sirius Black. Lucius Malfoy is still on the Board of Governors of Hogwarts.
This was yet another uneventful as far as anything big. This is, however, the year James Potter and Severus Snape got into their fight. Something had set both of them off and, before long, Dumbledore and McGonagall were attempting to pull them apart. Lily was called down to the school and everything had been explained. Harry was teased about it for sometime before Ron managed to knock a Slytherin across the great hall which shut people up. This is also the time that Severus really started leering at Harry. Before, it had been a simple dislike. The Weasleys had still won the Daily Prophet drawing and traveled to Egypt. James and Lily gave Harry the new Firebolt for his birthday.
Bertha Jorkins was never killed by Voldemort, and thus still works at the Ministry. Alastor Moody did go and teach at Hogwarts by Dumbledore's request, as Professor Sylvanus has taken a year off for vacation. Everything that happened with canon-fake-Moody happens with this one as far as scaring students and turning Malfoy into a ferret. He does not actually demonstrate the unforgivables. Lucius Malfoy tries to get him removed from the school, but fails. The Triwizard Tournament is not scheduled for this year. Presumably, James Potter convinced Barty Crouch to hold it during Harry's seventh year, much to Lily's disapproval. Cedric Diggory graduates with the rest of his class.
This is when it all begins. Antonin Dolohov had kept ties with many of the pureblooded Death Eaters. Over time, they weeded out the filth, the halfbloods who had been a part of Voldemort's original group. One of his sources discovered the flower around the same time that Severus Snape had, and Dolohov had his edge. He began recruiting more purebloods and abducting muggles to be used for all sorts of illicit activities. They made themselves known around the Christmas holiday, and the Order of the Phoenix quickly reformed. There were little confrontations between the Order and the Death Eaters for quite some time, though Harry still wanted to join the OotP. His mother forbade him, but he still managed to put together Dumbledore's Army, advertising it as an organization for students wishing to help out. Professor Sylvanus offered his time to the students to assist their endeavors. During the first part of the new year, Dolorus Umbridge made a last ditch effort to gain control of some of the inner workings at Hogwarts. The Potters discovered this, and turned her into Cornelius Fudge, who quickly sacked her. Eventually, she became a Death Eater. Harry and the others sit their O.W.Ls and leave for the summer.
During the first part of the summer, there is an attack on Hogsmeade. Several people were injured, but no one had been killed. There was a great deal of damage, and the Death Eaters took credit for the attacks. At this time, Azura moves into the castle to stay out of the line of fire, though she does periodically return to check on things and generally travels with the students during their weekends. Shortly after the start of term, the neighborhood of Spinner's End is destroyed, and Severus is forced to take up full residence at Hogwarts. Many of his things had been guarded beforehand, so he did not lose much. Lucius Malfoy is removed from the Board of Governors for being overheard threatening a muggleborn in Hogsmeade. There is another attack, this time on Diagon Alley. The owner of Flourish and Blotts was killed along with the editor from Obscurus Books. Several others were injured including Lily Potter who had been spending her day off shopping. She was alright, but spent nearly a month at St. Mungos. Dolorus Umbridge is reinstated as undersecretary after attending a short seminar on "Power, Corruption, and How to Stay on Someone's Good Side". The Ministry saw this as sufficient, though many people were quite upset about it. Horace Slughorn is killed in the spring for not siding with the Death Eaters. Harry still receives the Potions text once used by Severus Snape, and the professor allows him to continue using it without letting him know who's it was.
Over the summer, there have been a great deal more deaths and disappearances. Unrelated to the Death Eaters, Remus Lupin was attacked by Fenrir Greyback for being a "failure". After a bit of a struggle, Lupin accidentally killed Greyback when a spell forced him into moving traffic and he was hit by an 18-wheeler. Remus took full responsibility and stood trial. He was almost sent to Azkaban under Dolorus Umbridge's prosecution, but was saved by the defense of James Potter and Sirius Black. Though there has been a lot of unease in the air, students have returned to Hogwarts. The Triwizard Tournament is starting up shortly, and the Quidditch World Cup has come to a close with the Vratsa Vultures as the victors.
